It’s often the case for very young children that swimming is their first organized activity, but in Cochrane busy moms will have to plan swimming lessons well in advance.

“We are already booked up till May,” said Big Hill pool director Suzanne Gaida. “Our pool is just too small and for moms and tots groups and pre-school swim classes we’re fully booked virtually all the time.”

For busy mom Susan Vincent, swimming is just one of many sporting activities she’s introduced to her three young sons. Twins Simon and Logan, 11, and Sam, 6, are experienced in everything from hockey to taekwondo.

“I think it’s important to have these activities at a young age,” said Vincent. “Then as they grow up there is a greater chance physical activity will remain part of their lives. It will help shape who they are and who they want to be.”
