Protective services members honoured for fire bravery

A woman critically hurt in a Jan. 16 Cochrane fire has died from her injuries.

The woman, whose name has not been released, passed away Jan. 20 after receiving severe burns from the fire.

Const. Leaverd Sandau, who risked his life to pull her from the flames, said it was a very sad moment when he found out. (more…)

Haitian couple looks to Cochrane for aid relief

As Marc Honorat walked into the boardroom of Spray Lake Sawmills in Cochrane Jan. 20, he looked exhausted.

Born in Haiti, Honorat had been in the country Jan. 12 when the earthquake hit. He had been in Grand Goave — just a short distance from the epicentre of the 7.0 quake — where he helps run a charity called Haiti Arise that provides technical trade schooling (more…)

Orphanage in Haiti gets help from Cochrane man

The first group of Haitian orphans stepped off a plane Jan. 24 to the waiting arms of their new parents. Many of the children were from a small facility just an hours drive into the mountains from earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince, Haiti, called God’s Littlest Angels (GLA) Orphanage.

Cochrane’s shrinking schools may combine programs

High School programming in Cochrane is to receive a significant overhaul.

At a Jan. 21 board meeting, Rocky View School trustees heard that with declining enrolment expected to continue at Bow Valley High and Cochrane High, a reduction of students and staff could result in the discontinuation of some programs.

Poison gas cloud leaks over Stoney reserve

Some residents on the Stoney reserve say a recent gas leak has left them sick and “afraid to go to sleep.”

Cynthia Wesley who lives on the Stoney-Nakoda Reserve on Dixon Hill near Sibbald Flats said that late last year she became aware of a bad smell around her home.

“It was like raw (rotten) eggs,” she said. “I thought the septic tank had filled over or something was wrong with the furnace.” (more…)

Olympic torch blazes through Cochrane

People lined the streets of Cochrane Jan. 20 to see the Olympic torch pass by on its way to Vancouver.

The atmosphere was exciting — cheering, face paint, flags and smiles — all pointing to a deep sense of national pride.

Morley greets Olympic flame

Hundreds of community members gathered in Stoney Nakoda Nation to greet the Olympic torch Jan. 20.

Carrying the flame was Cherith Mark, a resident who is currently working on her second degree at Simon Fraser University.

Olympic flame ignites big Springbank crowd

Thousands of Springbank residents braved chilly temperatures and dense crowds in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Olympic torch as it raced through the community Jan. 20.

Man charged for severe neglect of Springbank-area horses

Charges have been laid against a 50-year-old man in connection to the seizure of 33 horses from the Springbank area on Jan. 5.

The horses’ owner, Robert Lorne Craig, is facing two charges under Alberta’s Animal Protection  Act. The charges are allowing animals to be in distress and failing to provide adequate food and care. He will appear in Cochrane Provincial Court May 7.

Twin archers take aim at Alberta Games

Cochrane archer James Webster doesn’t need a mirror to correct the finer points of his pre-shot routine, his twin brother Mark does it for him.

The two 15-year-olds, who have been perfecting their skills with a bow every day for roughly seven years, are classified as mirror-image twins, meaning they are identical, but James is right-handed and Mark is a lefty. (more…)
