Riding the momentum of gold medals at both Rocky View divisionals and south-central zones, the Bow Valley Bobcats senior girls volleyball team finally ran into adversity they couldn’t overcome at Tier 4 provincials in Lethbridge.

The Bobcats did open the round robin portion of the tournament well on  Nov. 26-28, posting victories over all three Pool H rivals — Calgary’s Centennial High School, Eagle Butte and Lloydminster on Day 1. However, because they were in a lower-seeded pool based on provincial rankings, the Bobcats were forced to play the No. 5-ranked Cougars from Notre Dame High School in Calgary in the round of 16.

The Cougars would prove too much for the ‘Cats and Bow Valley’s dreams of a provincial title were dashed.

The Bobcats played out the rest of the weekend in the consolation portion of the draw. First, the team was dropped by the Bev Facey Falcons from Sherwood Park to end any hopes of a Top-10 finish.

The Bobcats would rally to beat Lloydminster before closing with a loss to Lethbridge’s Central Catholic High School to end the weekend in 14th place.

Meanwhile, in Canmore, the Cochrane High Cobras were chasing a provincial title of their own in the Tier 3 competition. Only the top three from each six-team pool advanced to the knockout round.

The Cobras opened on a high note, handing the eventual champions from Grande Prairie’s St. Joseph High School their only loss of the weekend. However, tight losses to Medicine Hat and Camrose would be the Cobras undoing as they barely missed the knockout phase.
