young athlete who tried to organize a community race to raise funds for cancer research said that despite the fact that nobody showed up, he still raised a whopping $800 for his cause.

Derek Keats, 15, hoped other local runners would join him for 20-km run from Ghost Lake to Cochrane’s rodeo grounds Nov. 1.

“The weather wasn’t that bad, maybe a little chilly,” he said. “But the day before the race when no one had registered, I knew I’d be doing it on my own.”

Still, they may not have been brave enough to embark on the run, but family and friends nonetheless generously sponsored the Cochrane High School student and donations are still arriving,” he said.

Keats plans to donate all proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Donations are still being accepted online at www.cancer.ca under Derek’s Run.
