Students awarded for perfect diploma exams
Rocky View Schools trustees took time to honour the achievements of some highly academic students in the division at their Nov. 5 meeting.
In the course of the June 2009 diploma exams, six students achieved 100 per cent in at least one subject.
Five students were from Cochrane High School and one was from Springbank Community High School.
“As a trustee, it’s really gratifying to see a culture of academics being nurtured like that,” said rural Cochrane and Bearspaw trustee Colleen Munro.
Ian Mount, Rianne Diepstraten, Sahil Sharma and Jenessa Fett, all from Cochrane High, each scored 100 per cent in Math 30 Pure. Sharma also took the top mark in Chemistry 30.

Ryan Haasen, also of Cochrane High scored the same in Physics 30, and Joel Dueck of Springbank achieved 100 per cent for Social Studies 30.
Cochrane High principal Chris Lees was also on hand for the ceremony, giving much credit to Cochrane High math teacher Alan Appleby, whose advanced placement honours program has a tradition of producing 100 per cent results.
“He is a gifted math teacher,” said Lees. “He uses a very traditional structure, but the kids buy into it and he challenges them time and time again.”
Several students couldn’t attend the meeting since they’d already graduated and moved on, though a few are still completing their high school diploma.
“I have a strong staff in general,” said Lees. “I’m very proud of these students but also of the staff.”
