Town still can’t find consensus on brand options

Roughly two dozen residents came to the RancheHouse to check out the four options for a new town logo Nov. 18.

Three of the options were of the stain-glass stylized Men of Vision statue that have drawn some criticism in the past, and a fourth option was entirely new — and blue — and represented a more realistic version of the Men of Vision statue.

Urgent care centre delayed to 2011

November 25, 2009
By: Rachel Maclean

Cochrane’s urgent care centre will not be opening its doors until 2011, said Alberta Health Services (AHS) spokesperson Bruce Conway.

Last April, $15 million in funding  was announced to finish the Cochrane Community Health Centre being built on Grand Boulevard. At that time, AHS reported the exterior of the building should be completed by the fall and the interior will take 10 months after that to finish.

But Conway said currently the care centre is only in the detailed interior design stage, with construction of the interior starting in early spring 2010 and doors opening in 2011.

By: Cori Lee Miller

When the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee (CEAC) found it’s footing 20 years ago in 1989, the environmental movement in Canada was small, but slowly and surely garnering support and growing.

Two decades later it’s considered cool, even trendy, to be a lean, green, environmental machine.

Life in a Vietnamese Hill Tribe village

Special to the Eagle

I love to travel, and particularly to places off the beaten path. I’m always looking for a unique adventure.

Joining a small group of likeminded travellers in Indochina provided just that opportunity. Because hotels don’t exist in the Hill Tribe Villages in Vietnam, those wishing to experience village life must arrange a home stay. After a bumpy ride along a dusty gravel road, our minibus entered the village of Dalak.

It started out as an artist collective looking to give folk music a bit of a twist.

“It’s kind of making folk music kind of sexy, to tell you the truth,” said Tom Wilson of Lee Harvey Osmond, a band headlining for the Cochrane Valley Folk Club Nov. 27 at the  Cochrane RancheHouse.

Cote riding high after season with Stampeders

November 25, 2009

While the 97th running of the Grey Cup won’t feature the host city, Cochrane’s own Rob Cote — who plays fullback and on special teams for the Calgary Stampeders — got a good taste of CFL playoff action.

And he liked it.

This year, the Cochrane product and former Cochrane High Cobra has seen “huge growth” and got his first taste of CFL playoff action in his second season with the Stamps. IceBear keeps new Spray Lake arenas emissions-free

November 25, 2009
By: Jeremy Nolais

To maintain the surfaces on two brand-new ice rinks, directors at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLS) have gone green, turning to a machine that is 100 percent emissions free.

The Olympia IceBear, developed by Ontario-based Resurfice Corp., runs entirely on battery power unlike many of its gas-operated counterparts and combines Canadian ice resurfacing technology with German advancements in electrical efficiency. The $160,000 machine is just one step SLS has taken during its roughly $11.6 million Phase 3 expansion to make the facility as environmentally friendly and efficient as possible, said incoming president and director John Clarkson.
