H1N1 clinic closed after vaccine shortage

A lower-than-expected supply of vaccine has caused Alberta Health Services to suspend all H1N1 immunization clinics in Alberta.

Officials say the province plans to roll out a new immunization plan in the coming days, targeting people in high-risk groups — these include pregnant women; children six months to less than five years of age; people under 65 with chronic health conditions; people living in remote and isolated communities; and health care workers.

Tschetter lawsuit ‘not about the money,’ says mother

Convicted killer Daniel Tschetter of Cochrane and his former employer C&J Construction are being sued by the families of the five victims who died in a 2007 cement truck crash.

But Lee Morrison, whose baby son perished in a car stopped at a red light on Macleod Trail, and Previna Jiawan-Gautreau, whose young daughters and former husband also died at the scene, say the $3.6 million lawsuit will do little to help ease the pain of losing their children.

“It’s not about the money,” said Jiawan-Gautreau. “It’s a wake-up call for truck drivers and companies that employ them, to make them more aware.”

New pool plans underway

Planning for a new pool is well underway at the town of Cochrane.

The current proposed location is at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Recreation Centre. The 75,000 square foot facility would include an 25-metre eight lane pool, leisure pool, therapy pool and a hot tub. (more…)

Pickin’ Party a big success

Despite snowy weather, the fifth annual Cochrane-Stoney music festival was a great success, according to Pickin’ Party organizer Andy Marshall.

He said close to 500 people stopped by the Nakoda Lodge during the eight hour event. It drew 14 musicians and bands from the two communities as well as artists and crafters from the Morley and Cochrane areas.

Award-winning country singer to ride into town

He is the first-ever recipient of the Dick Damron Award for his contribution to country music.

And now, Chris LeBlanc is coming to share his talent with the people of Cochrane for a two-night performance at the Rockyview Hotel for the Halloween weekend Oct. 30-31.

He received the award at the tribute show held for the country music legend Dick Damron — who has written over 500 songs and recorded more than 30 CDs, cassettes and vinyl labels — on Oct. 3rd at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino in Calgary.

Thunder reflect on debut season as Bobcats race into playoffs

If it really was the end to the St. Timothy Thunder football team’s inaugural season, a 35-0 blowout wasn’t exactly how they envisioned going out.

In what has been a season chock full of triumph and disappointment, the Thunder ran into a brick wall Oct. 22 in the form of the Bow Valley Bobcats. It was the first-ever meeting between the two Cochrane squads.
