Driver delays expected as River Heights Drive closes

River Heights Drive in Cochrane has been legally closed.

But fortunately for all the area residents and students at Bow Valley High School, the road will remain open until an alternative intersection off Highway 22 is completed.

The new intersection will be north of the current intersection at River Heights Drive and Highway 22.

Mike Saley, director of planning and engineering for the town, said right now there is no timeline for the project because there are current negotiations for right-of-ways and subdivisions happening in the area that need to be figured out first.

Saley said the new road construction combined with water service upgrades at the new development at Riversong will cause delays for drivers in the area.

“It’s likely, especially where it ties into the existing road, there will be temporary detours and delays for . . . residents and likely school buses,” said Saley.

Saley said the right of way would be given to drivers on the current River Heights Drive until the new road is finished.

“The east/west leg of River Heights Drive, as it exists today, will have right of way,” said Saley. “What I am cautious about is there is always this interface of tying in, and structural vehicles coming onto that road and off that road. There is also gravel trucks from the gravel mining operation that go there. So there is a whole mixing of uses that have potential for conflict with each other.”

The project will take a “number of months” to complete once it starts.
