Rocky View County is apparently a very safe place to work.

The municipal district has recently been recognized for its excellence in health and safety in the workplace, and has been awarded a Work Safe Alberta 2008 Safety Performer Award from the Minister of Employment and Immigration, and the Occupational Health and Safety Council.

It’s actually the second time lately the county has been recognized for its safe practices. In 2007 it won a plaque from the Alberta Municipal Safety Association for ensuring staff received appropriate health and safety training.

According to Dawne Warner, Rocky View County Human Resources Manager, the awards are greater incentive to make safety in the workplace a priority.

“In the last few years we’ve had more of an emphasis on health and safety, and put in place a lot of staff educational programs,” she said. “You’ve got to stay on top of it.”

Warner added that a workplace where employees feel safe is extremely important.

“If staff here feel safe, Rocky View will be an employer of choice,” she said. She also explained the award is not based on self-nominating criteria.

“They do all the research on their own based on Workers’ Compensation records and so on,” she said. “It’s a nice surprise.”
