The Team Canada member is focusing harder than ever on his project in Information Network Cabling, in the final days leading up to competition. Reid has been putting in approximately 40 hours per week practicing for WorldSkills, and he said the practice is paying off.
“I’ve been quite a fair bit under the time limits that I have been given,” he said.
Reid says this past summer has been crazy — full of practice, media attention and anticipation for the competition.
“Before worlds and Team Canada I had no clue it was going to be like this,” he said, adding the media attention has been interesting.
“It’s different, you think I’d be used to it by now. Come next week it could be a little too much for me to handle.”
Reid will compete Sept. 2-5, and join 900 other competitors in their quests for supremacy in their trade.
Reid thinks his biggest competition will come from Japan and Korea.
“They seem to win it every time,” he said.
He also said the competition will be a good opportunity for those younger students attending.
“It’s a good way of getting skilled traders noticed,” he said.
“Normally you wouldn’t get to see these people in action or in competition like this.”
As for Reid, he said he isn’t settling for less than a win.
“My plan is gold. I’ve been training the whole summer and before that, so I want something to show for my work.
WorldSkills runs in Calgary Sept. 1-7, at Stampede Park with free admission to the all-day competitions in all skills category’s.
