Backpacks give students a big back to school boost
The Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) library is overflowing with generosity in the form of school supplies.
The FCSS backpack program has 70 backpacks completely filled with school supplies.
Community resource worker Claire Young said last year FCSS was able to give out over 75 backpacks, but they only gave a portion of the supplies needed.
“We helped 75 students but that wasn’t a fully completed school list backpack,” she said.
This year all 70 backpacks are jam packed full of all the supplies on schools lists, making it easier for students to head back to class.
Young said demand for the program changed this year, as more families are struggling to make ends meet and buy everything for back to school.
“Last year people needed some things. This year people need the whole backpack completely supplied and that’s what we’ve done.”
Young said the support for the program this year was outstanding.
“The support of the community has been overwhelming. We’ve had fabulous support,” she said. “We were expecting the need and the community always comes through. It’s such a giving community.”
Many of the backpacks were given out on Aug.26, in time for the first day of school, Sept.1, but Young said there are still opportunities for others to make donations or receive backpacks.
“We wanted everyone to know that we can still help them out,” Young said.
She said FCSS plans to accept donations and give out backpacks up to Sept. 11.
Backpacks are available for students in Kindergarten all the way up to Grade 12. To request a backpack or to make a donation call FCSS at 403-851-2250.
