The Cochrane Kodiak mini boys team won gold medals at the Alberta Basketball Youth Provincial Champion-ships held in Calgary over the weekend.
This the first Cochrane Minor Basketball team in over a decade, and only the second ever, to win provincial golds.
After winning three games against the top teams from Edmonton, they defeated their season long rivals from Calwest 35-34 in an exciting championship game.
The Cochrane Kodiak midget boys also competed in the Provincial Championship with their sights set on a medal.
They started off strong with an 81-36 win over the top ranked team from Edmonton, the largest margin of victory by any team that weekend.
Manachaban Grade 8 students Chace Nielson and Dean Cheadle led the way with Chace dishing out 10 assists to go along with 26 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the perimeter, while Dean finished with 24 points and six boards.
The team continued its strong play with a second solid victory over Edmonton’s regular season champion before losing a heartbreaker to Barnwell in the silver medal game and ended up finishing fourth.
