The U-15 Red team was victorious as five Cochrane Jaguar midget volleyball teams competed in Alberta Volleyball Association (AVA) tournaments in both Edmonton and Calgary March 14-15.
Jaguars U-15 Red won the Division 2 consolation final. The coaches said they have high hopes for the girls at their upcoming tournament in Sherwood Park on April 4.
The U-16 Jags Stealth team had a solid finish in first AVA tournament of the season, but started off March 14 with tough loss to the Red Deer Queens.
Later, they turned it around with a win against the Rivals (EAVC) but lost to the 403 Selects, finishing third in the pool and going to the consolation side of the draw.
On March 15, the Stealth won against the DC Dynamite from Dawson Creek in the tie-breaking set that sent them to play the Medicine Hat Rattlers.
The second win of the day pitted Stealth against BVC Black in a fight for first place, which the Stealth won in three sets.
“These athletes showed a tremendous amount of heart and determination to keep fighting after failing to meet their goal of getting into the championship bracket,” said coach Darryl Noel.
The U-16 Black team finished 15th in the province out of 39 teams.
Coaches said the tournament provided an opportunity to try out different rotations and gain experience in preparing for the upcoming provincials and nationals.
The U-15 Black team took eighth place out of 47 in the province.
Shorthanded due to illness and injury, the Jaguars U-16 boys team lost March 14 to the WVC Lightning, Cal-Air and Fog Shock.
The Shock went on to finish fourth in the tournament when the Jaguars lost a tough match of two sets 25-14 and 25-21.
On March 15, the Jaguars lost to LVC, the Vikings and SEAVC Blue.
While coaches said the result was a disappointment, the team is looking forward the to third AVA tournament April 4-5 in Calgary.
