Town council will need to provide $277,085 to start an affordable-housing pilot project in Cochrane.
After hearing a report from Corinne Burns, Cochrane’s affordable-housing co-ordinator, council unanimously directed administration to include bridge funding into the 2009 budget Sept. 8.
If approved during budget proceedings, the town will purchase two duplex units.
One duplex will be sold as perpetually affordable housing, the other will be a rental.
The town has already received $646,532 from the Provincial Affordable Housing Block Funding.
The perpetually-affordable unit will be controlled by the municipality, but sold to a private buyer at 30 per cent of market value.
If the owner decides to sell, the property must be sold back to the town at a predetermined value.
