A trio of podium placements highlighted a strong performance by the Cochrane Comets Swim Club at the first long-course meet of the season, held April 15-17 at Calgary’s Talisman Centre.
And Comets head coach Suzanne Gaida said even the swimmers who didn’t pick up medals at the three-day event turned in solid outings.
“We had an awesome meet,” Gaida said. “The kids, themselves, swam very well.
“We had top 10 performances by a lot of the kids.”
Seventeen-year-old Cam Jaeger captured the Comets’ only gold medal at the event, winning the 50-metre butterfly.
Also claiming podium spots were 14-year-old Brianne Dickson, who finished second in the 200m butterfly, and 12-year-old Jesse Boutin, who grabbed a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle event.
The weekend meet — the club’s first event of the year in a 50m pool — marked the end of the season for a handful of swimmers, but 10 Comets who achieved at least a “B” qualifying time will compete into June.
Based on the results at last weekend’s competition, those athletes could turn in some impressive times in the next couple of months, Gaida said.
“Their times are already improving, from last year and from short-course season,” Gaida said. “We’re right on track for where we need to be.”
