Public consultations on transit to launch March 1

The Town of Cochrane will be holding its first public engagement on transit on March 1 at the RancheHouse to address the upcoming plebiscite on the controversial and much debated issue.

Speaking before council during their regular meeting on Feb. 13, manager of communications for the town, Emily Cargan, underscored several aspects of what is to be a three-month initiative.

Resident hopes for public talks on fracking

Hydraulic fracturing may not be a new topic of discussion in a global sense, but water coolers throughout the Cochrane area are hearing the term more and more as of late.

The issue is of concern to no one more than those who live just north of town, and if one were to take a drive up Highway 22 and head east along the 567 and then south on the 766 (Lochend Road) they may begin to understand why.

Crash kills Bragg Creek woman

Accident tragically takes life of Bragg Creek woman

A head-on collision that took place on Highway 22 near Redwood Meadows on Feb. 13 claimed the life of a Bragg Creek woman.

Irene MacAller was pronounced dead at the scene.

Redwood Meadows Emergency Services, Cochrane RCMP and Cochrane EMS responded. The accident occurred at about 9:45 a.m.

Census reveals Cochrane and area’s palpable growth

With the recent release of the latest Canada census data, Cochrane’s rapid growth over the last six years has now become official.

Currently sitting at 17,580, Cochrane’s number of inhabitants is up 27.8 per cent from its 2006 population of 13,760.

No matter how hard they tried, the Abbotsford Heat couldn’t burn down the House.

Cochrane’s Tanner House showed why Oklahoma City Barons head-coach Todd Nelson places so much faith in the 25-year-old forward’s unselfish work ethic during Oklahoma’s 4-0 American Hockey League victory over the Heat on Feb. 9 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Down Dowling disappointed

A young player’s grip on his pro-hockey career can be tenuous at best. One mistake can be the difference between playing in the American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League.

Cochrane’s Justin Dowling learned this lesson the hard way when, prior to the Abbotsford Heat’s Feb. 9 AHL contest against the Oklahoma City Barons at Scotiabank Saddledome, he was sent down to the ECHL for some “conditioning” with the Utah Grizzlies.

Bearspaw chief among leaders to meet with Harper

Chief Darcy Dixon of the Bearspaw First Nation in Morley travelled to Ottawa on Jan. 22, along with other Treaty 7 chiefs and their staff, to attend the Crown First Nations Summit in Ottawa to meet with Assembly of First Nations Chief, Shawn Atleo, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other government officials to address specific concerns of First Nations peoples.

Construction resumes at Morley’s new school

Construction has finally resumed on the long-anticipated state-of-the-art Morley elementary school and it appears everything is in order for the doors of the new building to be open by September of 2012, as Dawson Wallace Construction Ltd. recently won the bid as the new contractor.

Former Cochrane resident missing from Calgary

Calgary police are still searching for 24-year-old Ryan Lane, who was last seen in the early morning hours of Feb. 7 near the 5200 block of Country Hills Blvd.

The former Cochranite is described as Caucasian, 5’9”, weighing 150 pounds.
